Coming Out Of Last Minute Rush With Dr Vignesh Devraj
Hello Readers,
In my experience, I repeatedly come across this one single behavioral pattern that is the root cause for so many diseases we see. It’s about doing everything in a last minute rush. In today’s times, we have unfortunately glorified and almost take pride in being constantly busy and indulge in doing things under a last minute rush without realizing the health issues it causes us. Let’s understand why this is bad for us.
Here’s our take on this
- If you have a pattern of always waiting till the last minute rush comes up to meet your deadlines, you are doing your body a huge disservice. Our brain cannot differentiate between real and perceived threats.
- Being stuck in traffic, rushing to a meeting or finishing a task right before the deadline are all similar to being chased by a wild animal for your brain. This kickstarts your emergency response, and your body releases cortisol, norepinephrine and a host of other hormones to tackle your state of emergency.
- What we miss noticing in these moments, is that your body also shuts down or minimizes the performance of other systems like immunity, digestion, waste management etc to reroute this energy towards handling the emergency situation. When this compounds over a period of time, it naturally leads to a range of health conditions including hormonal imbalances, PCOS, thyroid disorders, immunity issues and burn out.
- Continuously pushing tasks to do it under last minute pressure is simply trading long term health for a short term surge in energy, which by all means is a terrible deal! Overtime, this could bring you to a place where you do not know how to work or function without pressure because you have trained yourself to become dependent on deadlines to finish your work.
- The good news is, this can be reversed! Start small – observe your breath, eat without distraction and bring down mindless entertainment. Start planning your day with a good buffer time between activities to start enjoying the novelty in small things.
- In my experience, I have seen people who can only perform under pressure and also people who prefer doing things from a calm state. The difference is people who wait till their deadlines rely on external motivation, while people who work from a calm state have strengthened their intrinsic motivation.
- When you choose to do your work, instead of finishing it because you have to, it makes a big difference and allows you to rely on your own strength and integrity to finish your tasks.
The topics discussed in this episode are:
- Why is always being in a last minute rush bad for you?
- Why do some people feel that they can be productive only in a last minute rush?
- Is there a relationship between last minute rush and creativity?
- What are the diseases that come up because of constantly living in a last minute rush?
- How to make the shift to operating from a calm place?
