Hello Readers,
Most people commonly assume that action is better than inaction, or one quality is better than another. But is it true? To understand this, we have decoded the three qualities of our minds – Rajas, Tamas and Satva in this week’s episode.
Here’s our take on this
- In Ayurveda, there are three manogunas or mental qualities. They are Rajas, Tamas and Satva. Rajas and Tamas are both, gunas ( qualities) and in an extreme case, also dosha (triggers). But Satva is only a guna (quality).
- Rajas, in its primary form is action. In extreme cases, it’s also anger and aggressiveness. Tamas primarily means darkness. In various forms, its heaviness and inactivity.
- Most people usually think being Tamasic is bad, because it makes you lazy and inactive. But in reality, we need both qualities to live a healthy life. You have to use Rajas in certain situations, and take appropriate action. And in some situations, you have to embody Tamas and stand back.
- The quality that helps you make the choice – whether to use Rajas or Tamas, is Satva. Satva is a space of clarity, from where you can make healthy choices.
- Satva is cultivated when you slow down, pay attention to your life, and build self-awareness about yourself. Eating healthy, sleeping on time, slowing down, meditating and reading spiritual books are all habits that help you strengthen your Satva.
- A good space to start will be understanding the quote by Victor Frankl – Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.
- Remember the saying, we slow down to go faster. When you slow down, you naturally pay more attention to your life, build self-awareness and strengthen the space of Satva. The more you strengthen this space, the better your choices and life becomes.
The topics discussed in this episode are:
- What are Rajas, tamas and Satva?
- Why are Rajas and Tamas called Gunas and Doshas?
- Is one guna better than the other?
- Why is cultivating Satva important?
- How to cultivate Satva?
